2017 - 2018
Inova Children’s Hospital, Fairfax County and Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD) sponsor REACH programs to train primary care providers (PCPs) on screening, diagnosing, and managing mental health conditions in children and adolescents.
May 2018
Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (VA-AAP) receives a $20,000 grant to educate pediatric providers on managing mental health conditions. The program was called Healthy Minds, Healthy Children.
June 2018
VA-AAP and the Virginia Center for Health Innovation receive a $182,452 grant from the Potomac Health Foundation to hold a REACH training program in the catchment area for the Potomac Health Foundation.
Sept 2018
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is awarded a five-year HRSA grant awarded for $445,000/year for the program which becomes the Virginia Mental Health Access Program (VMAP). Application is completed in collaboration with the VA-AAP and stakeholders from VCU/VTCC, UVA, ODU, CHKD, Inova, CNHS and Carilion.
Workgroups for PCP Education, Child Psychiatry Consults, Care Navigation and Telehealth formed. Legal contracting and infrastructure building for VMAP child psychiatrist consult line and call center ensues fall 2018/spring 2019. REACH programs continue, Project ECHOs start, and Mental Health QI projects begin.

Over 20 presentations on VMAP at various stakeholder conferences and groups reaching over 2400 stakeholders in health care, mental health, government, and the community.
First large stakeholder meeting held December 2018.

Virginia Governor’s Budget for fiscal year starting July 2019 includes $1.23 million for VMAP through the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and it is passed by the General Assembly. Funding supports fully implementing VMAP services in northern and eastern Virginia.
April 2019
VA-AAP is awarded $100,000 from Cigna to support REACH and Project ECHO programs.
June 2019
Fairfax County provides $135,000 to support child psychiatry consult services in northern Virginia.
Aug 2019
VMAP Consult Line opens to pilot PCP practices.
Jan 2020
Medical Society of Virginia Foundation named VMAP Administrator by DBHDS.

Virginia Governor’s Budget for fiscal year starting July 2020 includes $4.22 million to fully fun VMAP statewide. However due to COVID-19 pandemic impact, amount is unallotted.
April 2020
Jenkins Foundation provides $50,000 grant to support VMAP.
June 2020
Fairfax County provides $100,000 to support child psychiatry consult services in northern Virginia.
July 2020
VMAP increases Consult Line coverage to 40 hours a week and adds feature that allows PCPs to request a consult online.
Oct
2020
First regional hub services initiated in VMAP's Northern Virginia region, including care navigation services and a licensed mental health professional to assist with PCP consults.
NOV 2020
VMAP funding restored during Virginia Special Session. VMAP can now expand statewide!
